I’m finally ready to share our pizza dough recipe with you. Yes, it’s been a long time coming. You see, pizza is sacred in our house. Pizza makes the world a better place, just ask my husband Donnie’s opinion about this. We love pizza, it’s basically a love language in our house and a regular item on the menu. First, a little background knowledge for you. Donnie grew up in Upstate New York, where “mom and pop” pizza and wing restaurants are everywhere. As a young kid, he ate homemade pizza at his grandma and grandpa’s house with his siblings and cousins every Sunday night. He doesn’t just love pizza, it’s sentimental. I’ve always loved pizza myself, but I have to admit until traveling to both New York and Chicago I hadn’t experienced true pizza in my opinion. Since Donnie and I’s relationship began we’ve evolved from baking frozen cardboard pizza in the oven, to making a homemade-ish version of pizza with a refrigerated can of dough from Walmart, to truly homemade pizza and dough. You know how I am now, everything has to be “good” ingredients. What I mean by “good” ingredients is REAL ingredients. No artificial flavorings or coloring, and definitely no preservatives. From the dough, to the cheese, sauce, and toppings-I’m very selective about our choices.
You may not think of pizza as a “health” food and I get that. But, with REAL ingredients I have no guilt about this pizza dough recipe. Life is meant to be enjoyed, and Donnie and I love making this homemade dough together. Pizza = happiness. I know I’m not wrong about that. This pizza dough recipe is very simple. I promise, we make it all the time! If you’ve never made homemade pizza dough before, I hope you’ll give our recipe a try. It’s important to note that we’ve never met a pizza style we didn’t love. We use this pizza dough recipe for all styles of pizza including New York, Chicago Deep Dish, and most recently Detroit. You can even make this pizza dough recipe into a calzone instead or some garlic cheese bombs, knots, or cheesesticks.
Ready to make the best pizza dough recipe ever now?
Ingredients
- 1 Packet of Yeast (we typically use the Red Star Active Dry Yeast)
- 3 tablespoons Avocado Oil
- 2 teaspoons Coconut Sugar
- Himalayan Pink Salt or Sea Salt
- Garlic Powder
- Basil
- 1 1/4 cup 140° water
- 1 1/2 cup of flour to begin with and then 1 1/2 cup later on
Directions
- Mix 1 packet of yeast with 1 1/2 cup of flour. Add a little bit of salt and some garlic powder/granules and basil to your liking.
- Add 3 tablespoons of avocado oil (olive oil works well also) and 2 teaspoons of coconut sugar (or any sugar of your choice). We mostly use coconut sugar in all of our cooking/baking because it has a lower glycemic index compared to regular cane sugar.
- Next, add 1 1/4 cup of 140° water and stir with a wooden spoon.
- Finally, add 1 1/2 cup of flour 1/4 cup at a time and stir as you go.
- Form into a ball and put the dough ball in a small oiled bowl (avocado oil) with plastic wrap on top and then covered with a towel.
- Now preheat the oven to 425° and place the bowl on top of the stove for 30 mins or so, while the oven is heating up.
- Roll out the dough on a floured counter, and put it into your pizza pan of choice for baking. We always rub avocado oil on whatever pizza pan we are using, before putting the dough in. Add the sauce, cheese, and toppings. Now it’s ready to bake! Depending on what style of pizza you are making, will determine how long to bake your pizza. We make our Chicago Deep Dish pizza in a springform cheesecake pan, and that takes probably closer to 30 minutes. The Detroit style pizza and regular circle New York pizza on a typical pizza pan take approximately 15 minutes or so. Keep an eye on the pizza, and feel free to broil it at the end to melt/crisp the cheese more.
