If you live in a state or area where Daylight Savings Time is observed, we’ve just entered the season referred to as “Spring Forward”. Spring is near, and so is more daylight. Where I live in Colorado, the sun is now setting around 7 PM. Despite the enthusiasm most people have for more daylight, there are still so many complaints that come with this change—mostly centered around the lack of sleep and grogginess we may feel for a few days or weeks.
An observation I’ve quite often had, is that no matter what—people will complain. I’ve worked on moving myself away from this, and embracing the current season I find myself in. Just like anyone else, I have my favorite times of year. But I also appreciate at least something about EVERY season, including Daylight Savings Time AND Standard Time.
An unpopular opinion I know, but I don’t ever feel too bothered by the Winter, cold, and darkness that comes with that time of year. I view it as something we are meant to naturally do. A time to rest, turn inward more, retreat, and recuperate. I allow myself to embrace the coziness.
However, I equally enjoy when the sun sets late during the Summer, sitting out on my back deck in the evening, the ability to take the dog on a walk much later and with daylight still present, sitting outside in the early morning, hiking, and in general the heat of the sun.
A good lesson here is to not let yourself become bothered by big things like this that we cannot control. There are so many other things for me to worry about and focus on. I am not in charge of Daylight Savings Time, whether we observe it or not, what the sun does or does not do, what the temperature is outside, and so on.
As I’m starting to see the very first signs of this new season that is upcoming, in my backyard some flower stems have started to emerge from the dirt—I’m reminded of the blessing that new growth and change brings. I am using this as a time to ask myself how I need to grow and change in this new season.
