How to stay true to yourself in a time of Uncertainty

Everything is fluid and ever-changing in our world today. I know I am not alone in feeling disappointed in the negativity surrounding us, when it has often seemed as if things are already hard enough. Since March, I have found myself feeling a rollercoaster of emotions, at times feeling fearful, anxious, sad, upset, and even comfortable.

I’ve also felt confused about what the right thing is to be doing. A recent conversation with a coworker of mine, left me with a new perspective. We all may have a different comfortability level with various things right now-and this may change for us as time goes on. What we have to do, is respect others with different comfortability levels and hold ourselves accountable to our own.

I think it is a common saying, “you are entitled to your own opinion” and I believe this to be true-but not when we make others feel bad for not sharing in our own opinions and beliefs.

Here is what I’ve decided to do for myself, and I hope it is also helpful for you.

  1. Hold yourself accountable to your own standards and values
I think this goes for all things big and small. Stick to your own core values, and hold yourself accountable to not budge when it comes to what matters most to you.
  2. Don’t ever feel like you have to justify yourself
I’ve often felt as if I needed to explain myself, including my personality and/or my feelings. I believe we shouldn’t ever feel like we have to justify ourselves.
  3. Be happy with who you are, and if you aren’t happy-take steps to grow into someone you are proud to be
It’s true that self love goes a long way. If you aren’t currently happy with who you are, take steps toward becoming the best version of yourself. I love that we can constantly grow and evolve.
  4. Surround yourself with people who love you for who you are
We can’t possibly be everyone’s favorite person, and thats okay. Find your people, and don’t waste time on those that aren’t.

I have not perfected these behaviors by any means-but I have decided to start working toward choosing these steps for myself, every day. One of my favorite authors is Gretchen Rubin, and I love this quote of hers.

“Act the way you want to feel”

Gretchen Rubin

Spread kindness and compassion, be understanding of differences, and don’t cross your own lines of comfortability.

In the Spirit of Adventure,

Demie
