A Heartfelt Reflection of time with Family

Mt. Massive Golf Course in Leadville, Colorado

I am so thankful to have spent several days in a row with my mom and dad here in Colorado with us. I never take time spent with my parents for granted, and cherish every new memory we get to make. This time felt even sweeter together. Just a few months ago, my mom was cancelling her flight out here due to the current health crisis and I wondered if we would even get to spend any time at all together during the Summer.

Last Summer, we enjoyed time together but it was challenging due to the unbelievably hard season of unemployment that I was just entering into the beginning of. Our time together then provided a sense of comfort, but even that was fleeting with the overwhelming sense that I was lost, and completely unsure of where I was meant to land.

So this Summer, we were eager to enjoy every sweet minute together. When the four of us are together, golf is usually on the agenda. My dad always looks forward to playing “Rocky Mountain golf”. This year, we played 7 different courses. Cherokee Ridge is probably our favorite course, largely because of the steady stream of airplanes flying overhead. If you didn’t know that about me, I love airplanes; something I clearly inherited from my dad. Shining Mountain is a very close second, it is a beautiful mountain course.

Something new for us to do this Summer, was play corn hole. My parents surprised us with this game as a housewarming gift and we have practically played it nonstop since. My dad even painted a few projects for us, and every time I look at something that he has painted, it makes me smile.

The beginning of July marked 3 years we have lived in Colorado, and although I am happy with the life we have built so far in this beautiful state, I do miss my family. Growing into early adulthood and my mid-twenties, I have found my relationship with my parents has evolved into something I could only dream of. Simply put, we are the best of friends.

I absolutely love treating friends and family to their favorite foods, usually with a healthy twist or at least homemade with quality ingredients. For the first time ever, I made homemade gravy for Rachael De Vaux’s chicken recipe and mashed potatoes. I even made homemade tortillas for tacos, and they turned out great. I doubt we ever buy tortilla shells at the grocery store again. From elk on the raclette grill, to homemade pizza we really enjoyed several delicious meals together.

Although it seems as if our life here on Earth is long, I would argue that it is actually quite short. We are never guaranteed another day. I think that is why I feel so sad when our time with family comes to an end, I don’t know with absolute certainty that we will have the opportunity to make more memories. I guess this is a reality for everything in life, and why we must fully enjoy the happiest of times while we are in the moment.

In the Spirit of Adventure,

Demie
