Mt. Sherman: A Failed Attempt & A Successful Summit

Mt. Sherman is one of the easiest 14ers to summit in Colorado, and in February 2018 we failed to do just that. We were left feeling disappointed and frustrated that we were unable to summit this easier peak. Still new to hiking 14ers, we had a lot to learn.

In May 2018, we set out to try again and successfully reached the summit! Finally reaching the summit felt that much more victorious. On our way back down the mountain, we had the opportunity for some real fun. We took off our outer jackets, sat on them, and sledded down the face of the mountain!

Where we sledded down the mountain

We learned a lot from both our failed attempt and successful summit, that extends way beyond the hiking of an actual mountain. Maybe that is why I enjoy every aspect of hiking a 14er, it is a challenge that relates to life in an abundance of ways. Sometimes even with the best intentions, something doesn’t work out. It likely isn’t a result from a lack of desire or determination, but circumstances beyond our control such as conditions or timing.

Not if, but when you reach a challenge, disappointment, or failure, don’t be afraid of trying again.

Each mountain we hike, I learn more about what it means to reach the summit and the challenge of hiking 14ers. Not only is each mountain different, but any given day can make a mountain and hike different too. I think we learn more from our failed attempts in life, and these failed attempts are ultimately what allow us to move on to successful summits.
